Desiet Eyes To Tokyo Olympics
Desiet Kidane, a young cyclist, who has represented her country in many national and international events, was born in 2000, making her one of the most impressive youngest Eritrean cyclists. Desiet, who currently is with Gala Nefhi cycling team, has won two gold medals in the Youth Cycling Championship of Africa, held in Rwanda in 2018. She won first place in both the road race and time trial events. On October of the same year, she participated in a race hosted in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she was able to finish in the top 10. This has brought her many acclaims both nationally and internationally and has brought her to the attention of many professional cycling teams.
Desiet also raced in World Championships in Australia in 2018 and placed 22nd. In 2019, in African Championships held in Bahrdar, Ethiopia, she brought home three medals. In the Under 23, both time trial and road race, she placed second and in Elite Women's third. In the same year, she represented Eritrea in a competition in London.
Desiet has been attending a UCI centre in Switzerlandtraining with a team. She has been learning valuable techniques and lessons, and she claimed that was helping her improve her results. The Tokyo Olympic Games has been postponed a year because of the global Coronavirus pandemic. This extra year is being used to hone the athletes’ capabilities.
We have promising female Eritrean cyclists. To name some, Mosana Debessay and Desiet Kidane. The experienced Mossana Debessay, who is currently with the team Denden, has had the opportunity to work and train with an Italian professional team.
''To compete in the Olympic Games is the greatest honour ever given to any athlete. My dream is to represent my country in the Tokyo Olympics. Thus, I have started my preparations early. God willing!'', says Desiet Kidane.
